When we talk about period poverty, it’s easy to think it’s just about money. And sure, affordability plays a big part — but it’s not the whole picture.
Access means being able to manage your period with dignity, wherever you are and however your life looks. It’s about comfort, confidence, safety and choice.
It’s:
- Having a product on hand when your period shows up unannounced
- Finding something that actually works for your body
- Being able to change it safely- even at work, school, or in a remote town
-
Buying it with your groceries, not as a luxury or afterthought
For far too many Australians, that kind of access just doesn’t exist for those doing it tough.
The truth is, period poverty is real — and it's everywhere
According to the 2024 Bloody Big Survey by Share the Dignity, the reality is shocking:
-
Over half of the respondents have missed work or school because of their period 😳
-
3 in 10 people have had to choose between period products and essentials like food or petrol
-
Many said they’ve been caught without products, with no idea where to turn
For people facing homelessness, domestic violence or displacement, period products are often the last thing they have access to and one of the most important things they need.
Access isn't just about what’s on a shelf. It’s about dignity. It’s about safety. It’s about care.
Why the August Dignity Drive matters
This August, Share the Dignity is calling on Australians to help end period poverty — one product at a time.
Through their Dignity Drive, you can donate period products at any Woolworths store or registered collection point. These donations go directly to people in need — including women and girls fleeing violence, people sleeping rough, remote and Indigenous communities, and families choosing between nappies or pads at the checkout.
Since launching, Share the Dignity has already distributed over 5 million period products across Australia. That’s 5 million moments of relief, comfort, and dignity — thanks to people like you.
What Hey Zomi is doing and how you can help 💗
At Hey Zomi, we believe reusable period care should be accessible to everyone with a period. No shame. No stigma. No barriers.
That’s why, during the Dignity Drive, we’ve dropped the price of our menstrual discs by 40% at Woolworths. But only for one week, 6th to the 12th August.
Not because it’s a promo, but because generosity starts with access - and access changes lives.
Here’s how you can help:
-
Pick up a Hey Zomi disc during your shop
-
Drop it into a pink Share the Dignity collection box in-store
-
Know you’ve just gifted someone life-changing period care
Whether it’s for a mother, a daughter, a best friend or a stranger, your donation can change someone’s month, every cycle.
Because no one should have to choose between food and their period.
Let’s end period poverty. Together.
We’re so proud to be partnering with Share the Dignity to bring period care to the people who need it most.
