If you're a teenager, a tweenager - or the parent of one - you might be wondering: Can teenagers use a menstrual disc? The short answer is yes. Menstrual discs can be a safe, comfortable, and empowering option for tweens and teens who are curious about long-lasting, sustainable period care.
But we also get that it’s not always that simple. Trying something new with your period can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’re still getting to know your body. So let’s break it down with everything you need to know about using discs as a teen, and how to know when you’re ready.
When can I start using a menstrual disc?
Once you have started menstruating, your internal shape has matured to fit a menstrual disc, even if you’re young. It’s not about age - it’s about whether you’ve had a period and feel ready to explore a new type of product.
You don’t need to have used tampons first, but it can help if you’re already familiar with inserting period products. Some questions to ask yourself:
🩵 Am I comfortable exploring my body?
🩵 Am I okay with using a product that sits inside me?
🩵 Am I looking for long-lasting, discreet protection?
If you’re nodding along, you might be ready. If not, that’s okay too. You can always start learning - like practising how to find your cervix - before you ever use a disc.
But I’m still figuring out my body...
So many of us are. In Share the Dignity’s Bloody Big Survey, more than 40% of teenagers said they hadn’t received enough education about periods, and many described feeling embarrassed or confused. That’s why we’re big believers in learning at your own pace.
Our how-to page walks you through step-by-step, and our video tutorial is there when you’re ready. You can also check out our video on finding your cervix - a helpful starting point for getting to know your internal shape.
What if I feel tense or nervous?
That’s actually really common. Tension can make it harder to insert the disc. When the muscles of your pelvic floor are clenched, the disc may not go in all the way or sit correctly. Here’s how to help your body relax:
🫁 Try a physiological sigh - two short inhales through the nose, one long exhale through the mouth. Learn how to do it here.
🧘 Visualise your vagina softening or “letting go” - this can help your muscles relax. Our founder, Mika, usually describes this as a ‘vag melt’ 😅 Imagine your body is melting, your internal muscles are melting like ice. When you start inserting your disc, tell your mind to ‘melt.’ It is crazy how our brain takes over and our pelvic muscles can squeeze and tighten. ‘Vag Melting’ is a good exercise to practice 👍
😎 Breathe deeply and take your time. You don’t need to rush. If it doesn’t work today, then try again another day. It is all about relaxing into it, and while you may feel a little anxious, just know this is normal and can take time getting comfortable with it. You got this 🤗
Our top tip to insert a menstrual disc
This is our no. 1 top tip to anyone using a menstrual disc - use some water based lube and your disc will glide into place. We have a little video on the benefits of using water based lube you can view too.
Many people also find it helpful to insert the disc in the shower, with one leg up on the sink, lid of the toilet or the edge of the bath.
And remember, it’s okay to feel unsure the first few times. Wearing period undies as a backup can help give some peace of mind while you find your hey zomi mojo. 💛
Why teens are choosing discs over tampons or period cups
Menstrual discs offer lots of benefits for busy people:
✅ Long-lasting: up to 12 hours of protection without needing to change during school or sport (goodbye tampons)
✅ Invisible: no strings, no bulges, no smell
✅ Reusable: eco-friendly and cost-effective - just one disc can last years
✅ Comfortable: once it’s in properly, you shouldn’t feel it at all
✅ Easier: No weird folding, suction or tricky insert/removal techniques like period cups.

FAQ: Discs vs tampons - what's easier for beginners?
Both have their learning curves. Tampons are smaller, but some find discs more comfortable because they pinch to thinner than a tampon, and once inserted you can’t feel anything. Also, no strings. But, it also depends on personal preference. Our video tutorial can help you understand how discs work.
FAQ: Can I swim with a menstrual disc?
Yes! Discs are internal and can be worn while swimming. They provide a discreet option without the worry of strings showing.
FAQ: What if I can’t get it out?
We promise - your disc won’t get lost! It’s rare, but if you’re having trouble removing the disc, try relaxing your muscles and bearing down slightly, pushing, as if you're trying to do a poo. Reach in with a clean finger as you bear down and you should find the little handle in easier reach to gently pull it out. If you're still having difficulty, our customer service team is here to help.
FAQ: What if I'm scared to touch myself?
That’s completely valid. Exploring your body can feel daunting, especially if it’s new to you. Remember, you can take things at your own pace. Start by learning about your anatomy through resources like our find your cervix guide. You don't have to do anything you're uncomfortable with, and it's okay to wait until you feel ready.
There is so much power in knowledge in understanding where things are inside your vag - it is just as normal as opening up your mouth and inspecting your teeth or throat. It’s a really important (and beautiful) part of your body, but it is also more challenging to ‘reach’ or ‘figure out’. The more comfortable people are with their bodies in understanding how it works for themselves, the more comfortable you will feel in your skin! 💃
FAQ: How do I ask my parents or guardian about getting a menstrual disc?
Open communication can be helpful. You might say something like, "I've been learning about different period products and am interested in trying a menstrual disc because it seems convenient and eco-friendly." Sharing educational resources, like our how-to page, can also help explain your choice.
FAQ: Do I need to sterilise it before use?
Yes, it's a good idea to sterilise your disc before the first use and between cycles. You can boil it in hot water for a few minutes or use our cleaning tablets. All disc care instructions are included when you buy a hey zomi menstrual disc.
FAQ: Can I use a menstrual disc with a heavy flow?
Discs can handle a heavy flow. A menstrual disc can hold 4 tampons worth of menstrual fluid. For some people, they still need to empty their disc, because did you know - everyone’s period flows out faster or slower. For some people, your period might be more ‘fluidy’ and for others, it can come out thicker. But there is a secret power when using a menstrual disc - you don’t need to fully remove it to empty it! You can see more about this magic trick here in our video tutorial, we call it the ‘Easy Empty’ method. Another top tip as you figure out this disc with your heavy flow is to pair it with period undies. This will give you more peace of mind, until you feel confident to trust the disc on those heavier days.
FAQ: Can I sleep with it in?
Absolutely. Discs can be worn for up to 12 hours, making them suitable for overnight use. For more information, check out our blog on sleeping with a menstrual disc.
